MOT check vs buyer report

Free government snapshot and preview versus the full buyer report — what each layer includes and what neither provides.

Enter vehicle registration — run a check for your plate (interactive form loads with the app).

Illustrative car for inspection areas

A registration lookup on Car Buyer Check has two customer-facing layers: the free official snapshot with preview, and the full buyer report. Both use DVSA MOT History and DVLA data when those services respond for the plate. Neither is a garage inspection, finance check, or stolen-vehicle lookup.

Free: official record and preview

After you enter the registration, the free check shows make, colour, fuel, year, the latest mileage on MOT History, and which areas have notes. It does not show tax or current MOT expiry. The buyer report adds the dated wording, the questions, and the full timeline.

  • Enough to decide whether this registration’s file warrants a viewing or a deeper read.
  • No payment required for the snapshot and preview on a successful lookup.

Full buyer report (£7.99)

The buyer report opens the full MOT timeline with mileage, pattern chronology with original quotes where available, grouped dossiers (recurring, disappearing, fail-then-pass, and more), copyable seller questions, viewing tasks, and map areas on the inspection model. On this build the report is free — open it from the preview when you want every line in one place.

Illustrative repair costs or scores are not part of the product. The report translates file facts into investigation steps — not a declaration that the car is safe or a good buy.

Official sources

Is the MOT check on GOV.UK the same as your free tier?

We consume the same DVSA MOT History source for Great Britain tests, then add DVLA fields and our preview interpretation. Wording and dates come from government data; pattern labels are ours.

Do I need the buyer report if the preview looks quiet?

A quiet preview can still hide older tests on the timeline. The report matters when you want every quote, question, and map pin in one place.

Does the buyer report include HPI or finance?

No. Those checks are explicitly excluded. MOT and DVLA snapshot data only.

Do I pay for the buyer report on this website?

No. The buyer report is free on this build. Run a lookup and open the report from the preview when you are ready.

What is the difference between preview and snapshot?

The snapshot is government identity and status. The preview adds interpreted pattern summary and buyer position for that registration.
